FAIRFAX, Va. (AP) — Police in Virginia say an officer who fatally shot a man just inside his front door no longer works for the department.
In a terse, unsigned news release issued Friday, the Fairfax County Police Department said Officer Adam Torres was no longer an employee. The Washington Post reports that police say Torres was fired, but a spokeswoman declined to say when he was dismissed.
Torres fatally shot 46-year-old John Geer in August 2013 after a report of a domestic dispute. Witnesses, including other officers, said Geer was unarmed and had his hands up when he was shot.
In April, Fairfax County agreed to pay nearly $3 million to Geer's two daughters to settle a wrongful death lawsuit.
A special grand jury began hearing testimony in the case last month.
