NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — A New Jersey man has been sentenced to 24 years in prison for killing a high school student days before she was to be named prom queen.

NJ.com (http://bit.ly/1ILt7Ad) reports 20-year-old Al-Muqqadin Means must serve slightly more than 20 years of the sentence imposed Wednesday before he becomes eligible for parole. He had pleaded guilty last month to aggravated manslaughter and a weapons charge in the slaying of 17-year-old Aquilla Flood, his former girlfriend.

Prosecutors say Means fatally shot Flood in the head in her bedroom in June 2013, a few weeks after she broke up with him.

Means apologized to Flood's family during his sentencing, telling them he still loves her.

But Flood's mother was not moved, telling him: "If you loved her, she would still be here.
