MIAMI (AP) — Hurricane Dolores has weakened to a Category 2 storm in the Pacific and could be downgraded to a tropical storm by Friday night.
The storm's maximum sustained winds late Thursday are near 100 mph (155 kph) and the U.S. National Hurricane Center says gradual weakening is expected in the next 48 hours.
Dolores is centered about 255 miles (415 kilometers) south-southwest of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, and is moving northwest near 9 mph (15 kph).
Swells generated by the hurricane are affecting parts of Mexico's southwestern coast along with the southern coast of the Baja California peninsula. The swells could cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.
