CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — A 12-year-old girl recovering from a shark attack on the North Carolina coast is moving to another hospital to complete an inpatient rehabilitation program.

Dr. Bill Adamson said in a news release Monday that Kiersten Yow has been discharged from N.C. Children's Hospital in Chapel Hill and transferred to Levine Children's Hospital in Charlotte.

Adamson said Yow began walking with assistance on July 8 after her skin grafts had healed sufficiently and that she's now walking on her own.

Yow was one of two people bitten by sharks on June 14. She lost her left arm below the elbow and suffered a leg injury from the attack, which happened off Oak Island.

Her parents said in a statement that the move to rehab is "a giant leap forward" toward taking their daughter home.
