US stocks gain in early trading; European, China markets up

NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. stocks are opening with big gains, bouncing back from a loss the day before, as investors hoped that last-ditch talks would produce an agreement between Greece and its creditors.

Stocks were also higher in Europe and China Thursday.

Materials stocks were among the early gainers as the prices of copper, energy and other commodities reversed a recent slide and turned higher. Mining company Freeport-McMoRan jumped 5 percent.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 233 points, or 1.3 percent, to 17,749 as of 9:35 a.m. Eastern time.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index increased 27 points, or 1.3 percent, to 2,074 and the Nasdaq composite gained 71 points, or 1.4 percent, at 4,909.

The gains were broad. Ten stocks rose on the New York Stock Exchange for every one that fell.
