CAMP VERDE, Ariz. (AP) — Authorities say an 8-year-old boy who was being carried by a relative in a central Arizona river drowned Saturday.
The Yavapai County Sheriff's Office says the drowning occurred around 4:30 p.m. in the Verde River at a recreation area, southeast of Camp Verde.
The victim's uncle told deputies he was carrying the boy on his shoulders while crossing the river. He stepped in a deep hole, and they went underwater.
Deputies say the uncle, who swam to shore, couldn't reach the boy before he vanished from sight. The uncle screamed for help and someone nearby called 911.
Rescue and helicopter crews conducted a search and found the boy submerged in 4 feet of water.
The boy was pronounced dead at the scene.
His name was not released.
A sheriff's spokesman says the drowning appears to be an accident.
