In this photo by Joseph Nair, 9-year-old Aiden Yoong of Malaysia competes in the water ski men's tricks final at the SEA Games in Singapore. Aiden won bronze, two spots above his 38-year-old brother, Alex. Their sister Aaliyah, 11, won the women's tricks title, and 7-year-old brother, Adam, placed fifth in his waterskiing semifinal in his Southeast Asian Games debut. When it comes to competition, father Hanifah Yoong believes that if you're good enough, you're old enough. "In 100 years of the sport, there hasn't been an Asian world champion in waterskiing," Hanifah said. "To meet this aim, we had to build a new generation of skiers." Alex said since it takes years for skiers to reach their potential, it's crucial to get started early. "If you want to be a world champion, especially in tricks," he said, "then you need to start right now."
