CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — A grand jury in South Carolina has decided there is enough evidence to indict a white former police officer for murder in the shooting death of an unarmed black man.

The grand jury considered evidence against former North Charleston officer Michael Slager on Monday morning and Charleston-area prosecutor Scarlett Wilson announced the indictment a few hours later.

There's no trial date yet for Slager, who faces 30 years to life in prison if convicted of murdering Walter Scott.

Slager fired as Scott tried to run away from a traffic stop in North Charleston back on April 4. A bystander recorded the killing, fueling the debate about how white officers treat black people.
