MIAMI (AP) — Andres has strengthened into the first hurricane of the eastern Pacific this year, but is still no threat to land as it swirls far off the coast of Mexico.

Andres had maximum sustained winds of 75 mph (120 kph). The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami says some additional strengthening is expected in the next couple of days as it continues to travel farther out into the ocean.

The storm is centered 770 miles (1,240 kms) off the southern tip of Baja California, Mexico, and is moving northwest at 7 mph (11 kph).
