Fair-housing advocate Bonnie Jouhari and her daughter spent years on the run from white supremacists who'd launched a campaign of harassment and intimidation against them in southeastern Pennsylvania.

Jouhari says her daughter never got over the trauma and sunk into substance abuse and homelessness after serving as an Army medic. Thirty-three-year-old Pilar Danielle Horton-Garcia died last month in San Antonio, Texas, where police say she was shot in the head. Police have made no arrests but said Friday they continue to pursue leads.

Jouhari buried her daughter this week at a veteran's cemetery outside Philadelphia.

She says she has no doubt her daughter would have taken a different path if she hadn't been so abruptly uprooted as a teenager and forced to live in fear.
