Syracuse zoo's new addition: Elephant gives birth

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) — The Rosamond Gifford Zoo in Syracuse has a new attraction: a baby elephant.

Zoo officials say Mali started showing signs of pre-labor on Mother's Day and gave birth to a 281-pound, 3-foot-tall calf early Tuesday.

Mother and baby are doing well.

The Post-Standard of Syracuse (http://bit.ly/1QINMVS ) reports that the new calf will likely be presented to the public in about two weeks. Another of the zoo's elephants is pregnant and likely to give birth in the next six weeks.

The zoo plans to hold a naming contest for the new calf.
