NEW YORK (AP) — Mary Wittenberg is stepping down after 10 years as president and CEO of the New York Road Runners.
The organization said Tuesday that Wittenberg's two top deputies, Michael Capiraso and Peter Ciaccia, will take over its leadership.
Wittenberg, also was the race director of the New York City Marathon, is becoming global CEO of a new lifestyle company, Virgin Sport.
Wittenberg joined Road Runners in 1998 and because its first female executive in 2005. Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Wittenberg received criticism for initially deciding the NYC Marathon should go on despite the damage of Hurricane Sandy in 2012. The marathon was canceled two days before the race.
The NYC Marathon is the largest in the world with more than 50,000 runners. The event will be held Nov. 1.
