SEQUIM, Wash. (AP) — Authorities say two kayakers have died and another is in critical condition after the Coast Guard rescued them in rough waters off northwest Washington state.
Officials tell The Seattle Times (http://is.gd/6sV0iQ ) that 52-year-old Jacob M. Austin of Lacey and 39-year-old Mandi Walkley of Chehalis died and 50-year-old William D. Kelley of Lacey is hospitalized.
Coast Guard officials say they were part of a church-affiliated group of seven kayakers who encountered 35 mph winds and 3-foot seas. Bystanders spotted the kayakers in trouble about 2:42 p.m. Saturday.
Clallam County sheriff's spokesman Jim Borte says some of the kayaks capsized and four people apparently swam to shore.
Bystanders requested help from Whidbey Naval Air Station, which launched a helicopter. The Coast Guard says a rescue swimmer and a response boat also helped.
