ST. LOUIS (AP) — Police say a 5-year-old boy has died in a gunbattle as his family was driving away from a park north of St. Louis.

Lt. John Green says gunfire erupted Wednesday night from a sport utility vehicle that pulled up alongside the family's minivan. The child's father, who was driving the minivan, returned fire before the SUV drove off.

Green says the child was pronounced dead at a hospital. A 15-year-old boy and an older male passenger in the minivan were in stable condition after they also were wounded in the shooting. Neither of the child's parents was wounded.

No one was immediately arrested, and the name of the boy wasn't immediately released. Police said they did not know what the family had been doing at O'Fallon Park.
