NEW YORK (AP) — An unlicensed teen driver accused of killing a 4-year-old girl while he was fleeing from police has pleaded guilty to manslaughter.
A Manhattan judge had previously offered a prison sentence of three to nine years if Franklin Reyes Jr. agreed to the plea deal in the June 2013 death of Ariel Russo.
Reyes entered his plea Thursday. He is expected to be sentenced March 25.
Reyes was 17 when the crash occurred. The judge said previously that Reyes could not be treated as a youthful offender because he'd been arrested twice on felony charges since the fatal crash.
Reye's mother said Thursday her son had wanted to apologize to the family. She said he didn't intend for the girl to get hurt.
