BROOKINGS, Ore. (AP) — Authorities say an early morning house fire killed three people near Brookings, Oregon.

Curry County Sheriff John Ward says the blaze was reported Wednesday shortly before 4 a.m.

A Brookings police officer was first on the scene. He saw a 10-year-old girl walking away from a fully engulfed mobile home while holding an infant who had serious burns.

The sheriff says 54-year-old Douglas Landers had helped the 10-year-old crawl through a small bedroom window and then handed her the baby.

Landers, however, could not make it out. Also killed were 52-year-old Kelly Landers and the couple's 4-year-old granddaughter.

Ward says the two survivors were flown to a hospital. The baby was later transferred to a hospital in Sacramento, California.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but the sheriff says a space heater might be to blame.

The mother of the children was not home when the fire started, but she flew to Sacramento with the baby.
