LOS ANGELES (AP) — Los Angeles International Airport could face flight delays due to a four-year construction project aimed at increasing the size of safety areas at the ends of its runways.

The Long Beach Press-Telegram reports Saturday (http://bit.ly/1zO71TY) that the $250 million project will require closing one of the airport's four runways on a rotating basis.

The project that began Friday aims to expand runway buffer zones in case a plane overshoots a landing or take off.

The airport's deputy executive director Roger Johnson says he expects most delays will occur when bad weather creates visibility problems for pilots.

Officials say they will have a better idea of the impact of the phased closings once they are in effect.
