NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks are inching higher in early trading as traders pore over the latest batch of company earnings reports.

Broadcaster CBS jumped 4 percent early Friday after reporting earnings that came in ahead of what investors were expecting, while American International Group slipped 1 percent after its own results disappointed.

The Dow Jones industrial average was up 20 points, or 0.1 percent, at 17,999 as of 9:35 a.m. Eastern time.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index crept up a point to 2,089. That's just one point below its record closing high.
