LOS ANGELES (AP) — A Los Angeles police officer struck and killed a pedestrian as he drove his squad car home on a foggy night, officials said.
The bomb-squad officer behind the wheel, a 20-year department veteran, did not initially realize he struck a person very early Monday, Sgt. Barry Montgomery told reporters at the scene. The officer circled back twice to investigate before finding the victim and administering CPR, Montgomery said.
Fog may have been a factor in the crash that happened around 12:10 a.m. along Culver Boulevard in the Del Rey area, investigators said.
"It appears that this is just a tragic accident," Montgomery said.
The pedestrian, whose identity was not immediately released, died at the scene. The victim was described as a man possibly in his 50s or 60s.
The officer, who was alone in the car, was heading home after a shift at Los Angeles International Airport, Montgomery said. The officer was technically still on duty because he was driving an LAPD vehicle.
