In this photo by Eugene Hoshiko, members of a traditional firefighting preservation group perform stunts atop a bamboo-and-rope ladder in Tokyo. The group holds a firefighting event each year where members demonstrate old techniques and hold drills for modern disaster preparedness. The fire review day commemorates the Great Fire of Meireki, which destroyed much of Japan's then-capital city of Edo in 1657. Wider streets and organized firefighting brigades were among the fire safety measures introduced in the rebuilt city, which is now Tokyo.
