PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — The Rhode Island Supreme Court will hear arguments on whether the niece of a wealthy widow who gave more than $60 million to the now-disgraced Roman Catholic religious order the Legion of Christ will be allowed to sue over the bequest.
Arguments are scheduled Tuesday morning.
Mary Lou Dauray says her aunt, Gabrielle Mee, would not have given money to the Legion if she knew the truth: that its founder secretly fathered three children and molested seminarians. She says her aunt was manipulated into donating the money.
A superior court judge in 2012 said there was evidence the Legion exerted undue influence on the widow, but he threw out the case, saying the niece did not have standing to sue.
The court is not expected to issue a decision Tuesday.
