SILER CITY, N.C. (AP) — Authorities in North Carolina say three people have died and 10 others needed medical attention after using cocaine apparently laced with a painkiller.
The deaths and injuries took place over a span of several hours early Saturday in three different places in North Carolina's Chatham County, sheriff's office spokesman Doug Stuart said. The county is west of Raleigh, the state capital.
Deputies say the state crime lab has studied a sample of the cocaine and found indications it had the narcotic painkiller Fentanyl in it. He says the investigation continues.
"We haven't determined how it ended up in there. We don't know if it was a mix-up, or something done on purpose," Stuart added.
Stuart says federal officials are helping to investigate, adding no arrests have been made.
