FONTANA, Calif. (AP) — Fire has destroyed a sprawling Southern California pallet yard and several tractor trailers.
San Bernardino County Fire Department spokeswoman Tracey Martinez says the fire and explosions were reported Thursday night in Fontana.
Firefighters found four acres of pallets stacked up to 30 feet high fully engulfed in flames. The blaze was threatening dozens of big-rigs, a residence and adjacent business, and it was spreading into rows of heavy equipment tires.
More than 65 firefighters from numerous departments battled the flames for hours. Damage was estimated at more than $3 million, but the county fire department estimates more than $2 million worth of property was saved.
The explosions were caused by propane and acetylene containers.
Firefighters were continuing to break up pallets Friday to make certain all of the fire is extinguished.
