NEW YORK (AP) — A transit official says the "stupidity" of contracted workers led to a giant drill bit piercing the ceiling of a New York City subway tunnel in October.
Newsday (http://nwsdy.li/1vlmON1 ) says Metropolitan Transportation Authority Capital Construction president Michael Horodniceanu (hohr-ahd-nih-CHAH'-noo) made the comment Monday to MTA board members.
The 10-inch drill scraped an occupied train. There were no injuries.
It was being used on the East Side Access project that'll connect the Long Island Railroad with Grand Central Terminal.
Horodniceanu says the Tutor Perini Corp. workers hadn't properly flagged the drill locations.
He said it is "hard sometimes to battle stupidity. In this case, I don't know what else to call it."
He says Tutor Perini immediately reorganized the project's management.
The company didn't respond to a comment request.
