ATHENS, Ohio (AP) — A fire has damaged several buildings near Ohio University's campus, displacing several dozen students, causing power outages and closing some streets.
According to a statement from the city of Athens, the fire broke out along Union Street at 4:10 a.m. Sunday. Authorities evacuated part of the street, including apartments above businesses.
The city says four residents were treated at a hospital and released. Three firefighters and three police officers were treated for minor exhaustion and smoke inhalation. One of the officers also suffered a knee injury.
Ohio University says about 40 students were displaced by the fire, and many are being temporarily housed in local hotels.
The city says the cause of the fire is under investigation. Some streets reopened Sunday afternoon but Union Street remained closed to vehicles. Power is expected to be restored later Sunday.
