NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. stocks are ending mostly mixed, while the Standard & Poor's 500 index eked out a record close.
Energy stocks rose broadly Friday after the price of crude oil turned higher after weeks of declines.
Nordstrom rose 1 percent after the high-end department store reported better-than-expected quarterly results. Virgin America rose 30 percent in its market debut.
The S&P 500 index edged up a fraction to 2,039.
The Nasdaq composite rose eight points, or 0.2 percent, to 4,688.
By contrast, the Dow Jones industrial average slipped 18 points, or 0.1 percent, to 17,634.
The price of oil halted a slide, bringing relief to the energy sector. U.S. crude rose $1.61 to $75.82 a barrel in New York.
