NEW ORLEANS (AP) — New Orleans firefighters say a grandmother, three grandchildren and the children's mother died in a two-story house fire.
Fire Chief Timothy McConnell said the fire was reported around 12:15 a.m. Tuesday.
McConnell says first responders found the house engulfed in flames.
He said the children's father, Derrick Anderson, tried to re-enter the house to rescue the family, but the flames blocked his way. He was not injured.
Officials identified the victims as 77-year-old Martha Anderson, and her grandchildren, 12-year-old Jade Anderson, 11-year-old Jason Anderson, and 7-year-old Jayla Anderson. The children's mother was identified as Christina Squire, 33.
Firefighters say the fire appears to have start in the rear of the home on the first floor. They say the cause doesn't appear to be of suspicious origin.
