SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Search warrants show Saratoga Springs, Utah, police officers chased and shot a black man armed with a samurai-style sword as part of a Japanese anime costume because they thought he would hurt someone with the weapon after he swung it at them.
The documents say 22-year-old Darrien Hunt's brother later told investigators the 2 ½-foot-long steel sword was dull, but could cause injury if swung.
The warrant says Hunt used a hallucinogenic drug regularly and wrote a Facebook message shortly before his death saying he had a sword and was going to get shot.
An autopsy shows Hunt didn't have drugs in his system when he died of multiple gunshot wounds, including several to the back of his body. His family has said he was treated differently because of his race, though police disagree.
