3 dead in Southern California canyon crash

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. (AP) — Authorities say three people are dead and two others are hospitalized after their truck plunged 200 to 300 feet down a canyon road in Southern California.

California Highway Patrol Officer Clive Sheen says the Santa Clarita wreck occurred sometime Thursday night, but no one knew about it until 7:30 a.m. Friday, when one of the survivors regained consciousness and called 911.

The crash happened on Rush Canyon Truck Trail off of Sierra Highway. The area is a popular with off-roaders.

Three people died at the scene. The two survivors were flown to a hospital.

Santa Clarita is 35 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles.
