Stocks slip, pulling Dow back near 17,000

NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. stocks are slipping in midday trading, bringing the Dow Jones industrial average back near 17,000 points.

The Dow was down 57 points, or 0.2 percent, to 17,014 as of noon Eastern Time Monday.

The Dow closed above 17,000 for the first time Thursday after the U.S. reported strong job gains. U.S. markets were closed Friday for July 4th.

In other trading, the Standard & Poor's 500 index slipped seven points, or 0.4 percent, to 1,977. The Nasdaq fell 30 points, or 0.7 percent, to 4,455.

Investors will get a sense of how companies are faring when some big names report quarterly results this week, including Alcoa and Wells Fargo.

Bond prices rose. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note fell to 2.61 percent.
