YANKTON, S.D. (AP) — A South Dakota city with fewer than 15,000 residents is continuing to establish itself as an international archery powerhouse.

Yankton recently beat out Mexico City and its 8.8 million residents to host the 2015 World Youth Championships. The weeklong event in June 2015 will draw some 600 competitors from more than 60 countries.

Archery is as popular as ever in the United States thanks to movies such as "The Hunger Games."

Complex manager Bruce Cull says the films have provided great exposure for the sport.

Olympic medalist Khatuna Lorig, who trained actress Jennifer Lawrence for her role in the film, says the fictional bow-and-arrow-toting heroine Katniss Everdeen helped give archery a certain cachet with kids.
