The Standard & Poor's 500 index lost ground on Tuesday for just the second time this month. The slight loss for the index broke a four-day string of record highs.
The Dow Jones industrial average rose 2.82 points, or 0.02 percent, to 16,945.92
The Standard & Poor's 500 index slipped 0.48 of a point, or 0.02 percent, to close at 1,950.79
The Nasdaq composite picked up 1.75 points, or 0.04 percent, to 4,338.
For the week:
The Dow is up 21.64 points, or 0.1 percent.
The S&P 500 is up 1.35, or 0.07 percent.
The Nasdaq is up 16.60, or 0.4 percent.
For the year:
The Dow is up 369.26 points, or 2.2 percent.
The S&P 500 index is up 102.43 points, or 5.5 percent.
The Nasdaq is up 161.41 points, or 3.9 percent.
