The Dow Jones industrial average fell 21.29 points, or 0.1 percent, to 16,722.34.
The Standard & Poor's 500 index was down 0.73 points, or 0.04 percent, to 1,924.24.
The Nasdaq composite index fell 3.12 points, or 0.1 percent, to 4,234.08.
