COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Ohio says it plans to install screens on windows in prison cells for death row inmates to keep birds from flying inside.

The move by the Department of Rehabilitation and Correction follows complaints from inmates about birds and bird droppings because of the open windows.

Prisons spokeswoman JoEllen Smith says the mesh screens were ordered before Monday's release of a report by a prison inspection committee about the problem.

Smith says the goal is to have the screens in place by July and to block birds from flying in while allowing airflow to continue.

The report released by the Correctional Institution Inspection Committee also found that many inmates like the fact that windows are open and let in fresh air.
