OGDEN, Utah (AP) — A Utah man charged with shooting his wife's father during a Father's Day Mass has been sentenced to four years to life in prison.

Charles Richard Jennings Jr. was sentenced Thursday in Ogden. He took a plea deal in November, pleading guilty and mentally ill to charges of attempted murder and aggravated burglary. He also acknowledged a firearms violation.

The Salt Lake Tribune reports (http://bit.ly/1mf7zx4 ) that the victim, 66-year-old James Evans, asked the judge to imprison Jennings for as long as the law allows.

Evans had been shot in the head.

Jennings' attorney Michael Bouwhuis has said his 36-year-old client's mental instability led to the shooting. He says Jennings was having a psychotic episode the day of the shooting at the Catholic church.
