HUNTSVILLE, Utah (AP) — A snowboarder rescued after spending a night in freezing temperatures on a Utah mountain says he was determined to make it back to his wife and kids.
Terence Hulsman waved down a search helicopter Monday morning in the Snowbasin Resort backcountry, and was reunited with his family shortly after.
A 25-member search team went out looking for the 38-year-old after he became separated from a friend Sunday evening.
Hulsman tells the Standard-Examiner he got lost in white-out conditions. He says he decided to "dig down" for the night when visibility got down to 3 feet. Overnight temperatures dipped to 12 degrees.
Weber County sheriff's Lt. Mark Lowther says Hulsman was in stable condition but was taken to the hospital as a precaution.
Hulsman says he knew he had to survive for his 2-year-old, 4-year-old and wife.
