A gray-haired Fidel Castro made a rare public appearance last week, attending the opening of an art studio in Cuba's capital Wednesday. It was the 87-year-old former leader's first public appearance since April 9, 2013. In Argentina, the Dakar Rally continued though it was briefly overshadowed when Belgian motorcyclist Eric Palante and two spectators were killed in the sixth stage of the race Friday. The Dakar, raced over rugged terrain in difficult-to-control areas, often produces fatalities. Last year, a French motorcyclist died in a collision with a Chilean police car. Mexican "self-defense" groups pushed their battle with drug cartels, angering some townspeople who say they oppose the vigilantes because they are forcing their young men to join them. Residents of a town in the western Mexico state of Michoacan set fire to trailer trucks blocking roads to protest the arrival of more than 100 vigilantes in their community. The federal government has said the civilian vigilante groups are operating outside the law, but government forces have not moved against them.
