SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Jail officials say the Utah doctor who tried to kill himself after a murder conviction in his wife's death used a disposable razor to cut a major leg artery.
Utah County sheriff's Sgt. Spencer Cannon says Martin MacNeill was bleeding heavily after the suicide attempt around 5 p.m. Thursday.
Quick action by deputies and a jail nurse saved the 57-year-old. He was recently convicted of knocking his 50-year-old wife out with drugs in 2007 and leaving her to die in a bathtub.
Earlier Friday, jail officials were refusing to say how MacNeill tried to kill himself. Cannon says MacNeill was given the razor for no more than 15 minutes to shave. He broke it apart it to get the blade.
Cannon says MacNeill managed to cut his femoral artery and could have died without intervention.
