MERCED, Calif. (AP) — Authorities say a father and two children are dead after an apartment fire in California's Central Valley.

The blaze in Merced broke out around 12:30 a.m. Tuesday. Merced Fire Chief Michael McLaughlin says crews arrived to find the apartment fully engulfed in flames.

He told KFSN-TV in Fresno (http://bit.ly/1bd9MUB) that five people lived at the home.

A woman and a 13-month-old baby were taken to a hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation. They're expected to be OK.

Neighbors say the man escaped but then ran back in for the children. The victims haven't been identified.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
