The Dow Jones industrial average closed higher on Friday, logging a seventh straight week of gains.
The Standard & Poor's 500 index closed above 1,800 for the first time. Biotechnology company Biogen Idec gave the index a lift after surging on reports that it won market exclusivity for its top-selling multiple sclerosis drug in Europe.
The Dow rose 54.78 points, or 0.3 percent, to close at 16,064.77.
The Standard & Poor's 500 index gained 8.91 points, or 0.5 percent, to 1,804.76.
The Nasdaq composite rose 22.49 points, or 0.6 percent, to 3,991.65.
For the week:
The Dow gained 103.07 points, or 0.7 percent.
The S&P 500 index fell 6.58 points, or 0.4 percent.
The Nasdaq composite declined 5.68 points, or 0.1 percent.
For the year:
The Dow is up 2,960.63 points, or 22.6 percent.
The S&P 500 is up 378.57 points, or 26.5 percent.
The Nasdaq is up 972.14 points, or 32.2 percent.
