NEW RIVER, Ariz. (AP) — Authorities say a former military ordinance specialist has suffered a severe leg injury after an explosive went off in an unincorporated area north of Phoenix.
Maricopa County sheriff's officials say deputies responded to a call about an injured person around 6:30 p.m. Monday.
TV coverage showed a man being airlifted near two buildings that appeared to be a house and an outbuilding near Daisy Mountain in the New River area.
Sheriff's officials say the man has lost most of one leg due to the explosion.
The Arizona Republic says the explosive involved was of military grade. The circumstances of why it went off aren't immediately clear.
The man's name hasn't been released, but sheriff's officials say they are familiar with him and deputies have visited his home multiple times on reports of disruptive behavior.
