ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Republican U.S. Rep. Bill Young is being remembered as a longtime advocate for a strong national defense and for his hard work for his Florida constituents in his 43 years in Congress.

Young died Friday at age 82, one week after announcing from his hospital bed that he would not seek a 23rd term in Congress.

Young's chief of staff, Harry Glenn, said he died at Walter Reed Medical Center in Bethesda, Md. He had been there for nearly two weeks with back problems that came from a 1970 small plane crash.

Young was the longest-serving Republican in Congress and a defense hawk who was influential on military spending.

That's why he made headlines in 2012 when he said the United States should withdraw its forces from Afghanistan.
