How the Dow Jones industrial average fared Tuesday

The Dow Jones industrial average fell for a fourth straight day on Tuesday as investors grappled with mixed economic reports.

One report said home prices in July rose the most in more than seven years. Another showed that Americans' confidence in the economy slipped in September.

There is also concern that the political gridlock in Washington will shut down the government.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 66.79 points, or 0.4 percent, to close at 15,334.59.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 4.42 points, or 0.3 percent, to 1,697.42.

The Nasdaq composite rose 2.97 points, or 0.3 percent, to 3,768.25.

For the week so far:

The Dow is down 116.50 points, or 0.8 percent.

The S&P 500 is down 12.49 points, or 0.7 percent.

The Nasdaq is down 6.48 points, or 0.2 percent

For the year so far:

The Dow is up 2,230.45 points, or 17 percent.

The S&P 500 is up 271.23 points, or 19 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 748.74 points, or 24.8 percent.
