SABATTUS, Maine (AP) — Police are investigating whether a Maine man who led a drive to mandate gun ownership in his town threatened to shoot President Barack Obama.

A posting on a Facebook account belonging to David Marsters used a racial slur and suggested shooting Obama. When someone criticized the posting, the user said Obama "is not a legal president."

Sabattus Police Chief Tony Ward said Tuesday that initial findings suggest the retired Massachusetts police officer posted the comment but the investigation is ongoing. The Sun Journal, which first reported the threat, said federal law enforcement agencies were notified.

Town selectmen voted unanimously in March against Marsters' proposal to require heads of households to own guns for protection. Marsters did not immediately return a phone message Tuesday.
