The stock market edged higher Monday after a rise in gold and copper gave mining stocks a boost. That helped offset some disappointing earnings news from McDonalds and other big companies.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 3.44 points, or 0.2 percent, to 1,695.53.

The Nasdaq composite rose 12.77 points, or 0.4 percent, to 3,600.39.

For the year so far:

The Dow is up 2,441.41 points, or 18.6 percent.

The S&P 500 is up 269.34 points, or 18.9 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 580.88 points, or 19.2 percent
