ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — A group organizing a mountain biking trip for wounded veterans says someone stole five of their cycles from a U-Haul trailer parked in Anchorage.
The Anchorage Daily News reports (http://bit.ly/14WpBwz ) the bikes include one custom-made for Staff Sgt. Matt DeWitt, which police say was valued at $19,000. DeWitt lost both arms below the elbow to a rocket-propelled grenade. He says the way the bike's set up, no one else can really ride it.
Ride 2 Recovery organized the trip, which brought wounded veterans to Alaska to train for a race.
DeWitt says the veterans spent Monday riding on trails. The bikes were locked in a U-Haul in a hotel parking lot that night. When riders began unloading the next morning, they noticed the lock broken and some bikes missing.
