ROSEDALE, Md. (AP) — The National Transportation Safety Board says a trash hauler whose truck was involved in the explosive derailment of a freight train has a poor safety record.
Board member Robert Sumwalt said at a news conference Thursday that Alban Waste LLC had an above-average number of violations resulting in trucks being ordered off the road.
Company owner John J. Alban Jr. was driving the truck that was hit by a CSX train Tuesday in Rosedale, an eastern Baltimore suburb. He remains hospitalized in serious condition.
Sumwalt says investigators have obtained Alban's blood samples for routine drug and alcohol testing. He says they plan to interview him when his condition improves.
Sumwalt says the crash and blast caused damage of more than $500,000 to the train and $120,000 to the tracks.
