SEATTLE (AP) — Authorities on a scenic Washington state island are asking the public to stay away from a massive landslide that damaged 20 properties.
Island County authorities say Friday that the area around the slide will be restricted through Easter weekend. Only official personnel and local residents will have access with a badge.
Thirty-five homes were initially evacuated after Wednesday's slide on Whidbey Island, 50 miles north of Seattle. One home was destroyed, and four homes remained under evacuation orders Thursday night.
Crews have begun laying down a foot path for residents to access the homes blocked by debris that washed out a road. Authorities eventually hope to build a temporary access road, but that may take weeks.
