TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — State child services officials say a New Jersey woman who decapitated her 2-year-old son and then fatally stabbed herself appeared to have overcome her drug problems in the months leading up to their deaths.

New Jersey's Department of Children and Families released details Friday about the agency's involvement with Chevonne Thomas and her son, Zahree. They were found dead early Wednesday.

The agency says Thomas was given custody in April after eight months of clean drug tests. The boy had been removed from the home in August 2011 after Thomas tested positive for the hallucinogenic drug PCP in a random test.

Thomas' drug tests came back negative as recently as June 29.

A caseworker last visited the home on July 3, and officials reviewed the case three weeks later.
