First lady meets young tornado victims in Alabama

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — First lady Michelle Obama on Wednesday visited a summer camp in Alabama for children impacted by last year's tornadoes and met with local leaders on recovery efforts.

The first lady sat down with 78 children, many from homes damaged by last April's tornadoes. She stopped to hug each child and was peppered with their questions as they made trail mix snacks as part of her push for healthier American eating habits. The gathering, called Camp Noah, was being held in an area of Birmingham hit hard by last April's tornadoes.

Mrs. Obama had toured damage areas with her husband soon after the storms. Birmingham Mayor William Bell told her Wednesday that tornado recovery was proceeding well.

She planned to attend a Birmingham fundraiser Wednesday evening for her husband's reelection bid.
